Mayor Winton Dalley and his wife Jean have lived  in the Hurunui District for around forty years.  He was home in Hawarden at the time of the quake and describes how it was felt in that region.  In his interview he talks about how he gathered information in the first hours, his role as Mayor during the response and recovery phases, and he gives his observations on how the district coped.
