Hugh Wells lives in Waiau Village with his wife and two teenagers, and his parents nearby.  He runs his own business as a local handyman, works for a local builder and is the Fire Chief for the local volunteer brigade. In this interview Hugh describes how on the first day after the quake he rode his dirt bike up the Inland Road and the Leader Road to determine accessibility in and out of the area.  He describes what they saw and the people they met.  Hugh also talks about the overall emergency response and recovery in the subsequent days and weeks.
